The Atrium is an affordable extra care development in Preston, Lancashire, providing 61 homes across one- and two-bedroom apartments and a variety of communal spaces. To accommodate a short programme and tight budget, we developed an efficient design and construction schedule. By offsetting the residential wings, we were able to work with the existing site slope, reduce long, double-loaded corridors, and create a central courtyard that brings natural light and ventilation into the heart of the plan.
Additional landscaped areas include a second residential courtyard and a public open space at the front of the building, acting as a buffer to the street. The design prioritises flexible spaces that foster communal interaction. Among the shared facilities offered to residents are a barber and hair salon, external and internal lounge areas, and a Bistro with an activity room opening onto the shared courtyard. These spaces are filled with natural light and can accommodate a wide range of activities for residents, friends, and family.
