No.1 Hardman Street sits on what was a small, restricted, but prominent infill site in the vast Spinningfields development of Manchester. We were appointed to generate proposals for a new office building after winning a design competition.
Working with both Allied London and Mediacom, we designed a building with a very simple, cost-effective frame and a more elaborate skin to sit over the top. The exposed steel structure, services, and concrete soffits on the inside create a raw, industrial aesthetic that contrasts the interiors of nearby slick, glazed offices. From start to finish, No.1 Hardman Street took only 18 months to complete. Since moving in in 2014, Mediacom have recognised that the new stimulating, creative environment has increased staff morale, the quality of their work, and directly improved recruitment to the company.
