Measuring densities with UDL

This morning, Urban Design London (UDL) hosted an event about how to measure density. Jo and I looked at how different housing typologies fill a site and what densities these give, drawing on David Levitt’s ‘Housing Standards Handbook’ and thinking about how to apply these lessons in a modern context.

We also looked at the development of a local area over a recent time, tracing how the density of the Holly Street area has changed, from the traditional Victorian terrace, to the 1970s estate, to the Levitt Bernstein masterplan of present day. Using figure-ground drawings, we talked about how high quality streetscape can be designed whilst providing appropriate density.
