We recently visited The Atrium, an extra-care housing development we designed for Community Gateway Association (CGA) in Preston, Lancashire. Speaking with residents, we heard valuable feedback about the wonderful community that staff and residents have built together.
Completed in 2024, the development provides 61 extra-care homes across one and two bed apartments in addition to a variety of communal spaces. The building's shared facilities include: a barber and hair salon, external and internal lounge areas and a Bistro and activity room that opens up a courtyard – a space that has clearly become the social heart of the building. These areas allow residents to spend time with their neighbours and families, providing a flexible space that fosters a strong sense of community.
During the visit, residents reflected on their experiences living at The Atrium, from the lovely views from their apartments to the different activities they share with their neighbours.
Making the building fully accessible was a major design priority. Inclusivity has allowed a range of users to become part of the community. As Jackie said: “It is very easy to get around the building, the lift always works—which was my main concern when I moved into a second-floor apartment, as I use a mobility aid. I’m really happy that there have been no issues with it.”
Francis, who lives there with her husband, said: “I love my balcony—it's my husband's favourite place to be. We have a peach tree and a flowering cherry. There is comfortable space for four people to sit out.”
A highlight for many is the neighbourliness and sense of belongning that has been created; residents partake in weekly coffee mornings and join the evening Bingo sessions. Helen, who manages the Bistro, said: “Residents sit in the Bistro almost all day; there is a real community feel. I know all of them and they know me—we have a laugh together.”
Bill, describing his 93rd birthday at the Bistro during the summer, said: “My children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all came for a big party. There’s always a birthday party going on here!”
Anne, who was having a blow-dry at the hair salon, pointed out: “It’s like winning the lottery without the money!”
It was wonderful to experience an afternoon sharing stories with residents at The Atrium! We look forward to continuing our collaboration with CGA and contributing to its exceptional, community-focused work.
