Ramsay Hall, Camden

About:

Ian Baker House is a new eight-storey building for student housing in the courtyard of the Ramsey Hall complex in UCL’s Bloomsbury Campus. Accommodation includes 91 new self-catering study bedrooms, including six for wheelchair users, offering a valuable increase to UCL’s residential portfolio.

Architecturally, the new building provides a primary facade to the newly reordered courtyard. The form and materials respond to the adjacent Grade II Listed YMCA building, which we also recently redeveloped. The building is carefully modelled to respond to contextual issues such as overlooking of adjacent buildings and daylight impact. Sustainability measures include rainwater harvesting, a brown roof and connection to a highly efficient combined heat and power plant, which all helped the building to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating.
