Ramsay Hall is a University College London Hall of Residence situated in the Bloomsbury Conservation Area. Over the course of a number of separately procured projects, Levitt Bernstein has replanned and expanded the existing building.
The work to existing buildings includes the modernisation and expansion of the existing refectory, new bed spaces in underused areas of the building, and improved access throughout.
Ian Baker House is a new 8 storey building sited in the courtyard of the complex, which provides 91 self-catering study bedrooms including 6 for wheelchair users.
Its architectural language has been developed in response to the contextual issues of overlooking, daylight and massing. The chosen materials palette echoes that of the adjacent Grade II Listed YMCA building which was also developed and extended by Levitt Bernstein. A new courtyard is formed for the use of all Ramsay Hall residents.
The building’s sustainability strategy includes rainwater harvesting, a brown roof and connection to a highly efficient combined heat and power plant.
The building achieved a BREEAM bespoke ‘very good’ rating.
