Details

A competition-winning scheme for the first phase of the regeneration of South Kilburn. The development includes:

  • 110 dwellings,
  • youth centre as landmark,
  • public and communal outdoor space.

Adapting the Masterplan's perimeter block typology to an atypical site, the concept creates a new hierarchy of outdoor spaces, from resident controlled, landscaped communal gardens and revived and reconnected streetscape to private patios, roof terraces, balconies and window boxes.

The arrangement of the built form to provide these outside spaces also ensures a rhythm of modulated heights, from modest 3-4 storeys to more urban 6-7 storeys, and a varied texture to the street frontages.

A number of strategies guide the design, with an eye to the future as well as the present: mixed occupancy (families adjacent to singles and couples); sustainability (thermal strategy and integrated landscaping); broad consultation (including resident steering group); access (natural surveillance and security); generous and flexible living spaces (enjoying good daylighting and quality environment).
