The Neighbourhood Centre replaces an ad hoc collection of facilities with a high quality sustainable building designed to be economical to build and run.
It is integrated with the adjacent housing development, also by Levitt Bernstein, by its position on the new spine road and by its extensive use of timber cladding.
The centre is orientated to provide a new, high quality external space in front of the building. This gives the building a public presence and provides a large children’s play area overlooked by the main facade, which is clad in glass and translucent panels.
The change of level within the site is utilised to reduce the apparent bulk of the community hall and the building reduces in mass to the north of the site to minimise overshadowing and overlooking of adjacent gardens.
A total of 1235 m2 internal accommodation is provided and facilities within the centre include a 30-place Sure Start Nursery, a day centre for older people, a community hall, community offices and a boxing club.
