The University of Liverpool Heating Infrastructure Project wins an RIBA Award 2011.
The RIBA judges said:
“this building continues the noble architectural tradition of boiler houses as urban monument: sitting neatly on the site, its glazed gable ends reveal glimpses of the power that hums within.
The articulated roof form cleverly refers to the architecture of its listed neighbours while concealing the break-out of chillers. The elegantly conceived and executed fish-scale skin articulates what would otherwise be long blank facades while providing natural cross-ventilation.
The energy generated within provides much of the needs of Liverpool Universities (sic) estate. And the site of the previous boiler house has been reinvented into a landscaped garden.
The judges delighted in the economy, elegance and appropriateness of the solution and thought the main green generator within was itself worthy of an architectural award!”
The Heating Infrastructure Project has also recently won a Civic Trust Award.
